Much to the surprise of fans, Capcom unveiled a new crossover costume for Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition this week. Ryu can now be transformed into Street Fighter EX series' own Kairi.
- Costume Colors are palette swaps for outfits in Street Fighter 5. There are 10 color schemes per costume, and only the first two are unlocked by default. At the moment, they are the only way to customize your fighters – until the in-game shop launches in March.

This is the first crossover costume we're seeing here in Champion Edition and this outfit was also not a part of the content release road map that was unveiled during the Summer Update broadcast, meaning we might be seeing more surprises in the future. With this new look for Ryu, Capcom has revised the way in which we unlock crossover costumes, and so far it is much better than it used to be.

In addition to the surprise at this new crossover costume's existence, fans were also happy to hear that the time-frame for unlocking the Kairi outfit has been cut down significantly compared to what we're familiar with.

Previously, crossover costumes were released on a month-long schedule, with players being required to complete four missions over the course of four weeks that would each unlock one item for the costume. You had to get all four items, and missing even one meant you did not get to access the costume and that you had missed your chance.
That entire process has been thrown out now. To unlock the Kairi costume, all you have to do is play a single Extra Battle mission at the cost of 500 Fight Money per attempt, and upon one successful playthrough the costume is yours.
The 500 FM price point is exponentially better than the 2,500 FM per attempt each of the crossover missions would cost before. Not only did you have to wait four weeks to get one of these awesome costumes into battle, but you were also looking at a 10,000 FM total to unlock it — if you cleared each mission on the first try.
Successfully completing the Kairi mission grants you access to the costume with eight of its colors, but the process doesn't end there. Still, the requirement to get all 10 colors is already shaping up to be a massive improvement over what we saw previously.
In order to obtain colors 9 and 10 for the new crossover costume, players will need to complete two missions that are slated to go live tonight at 9 p.m. PT. Considering the fact that these are being relegated to the 'Missions' section, it is likely that these will be fairly easy to complete and probably won't cost you any Fight Money to do so.
Standard missions in Street Fighter 5 still exist and prompt players to do things like play a single Ranked match, hop into the CFN, or clear a handful of combo trials for a Fight Money reward. If the color 9 and 10 missions are in the same vein — which they likely will be — the entire process for fully unlocking crossover costumes has not only been heavily expedited, but also made much easier and less costly.

At the end of the day, fans can now go from wanting the new Street Fighter 5 crossover costume to having it with all 10 colors in about five days. The challenge is also going to be live for a total of about 17 days, meaning you have ample time to hop in there and no longer have to worry about missing a single mission one week and then being out of luck.
I truly hope Capcom makes this the standard when it comes to the crossover costume missions as it is far more efficient and enjoyable for us trying to snag this cool content. This Kairi costume could also be an indicator that more outfits that weren't on the road map are on the way, which is great news as there are still more crossovers I'm hoping to see here in Street Fighter 5.
